Foram revelados os indicados ao 17º Satellite Awards. A premiação é dividida em dois segmentos, Cinema e TV, e tem bom histórico junto à Academia. Ano passado, sete dos nove filmes indicados ao Oscar foram nomeados ao Satellite (eles escolheram Shame, O Espião que Sabia Demais e Drive, ótimas obras que a Academia deixou de lado). Mas devemos olhar para a lista com certa cautela: a International Press Academy (IPA), responsável pela premiação, costuma tomar decisões bem duvidosas: ano passado deixou Jean Dujardin de fora, assim como Rooney Mara. Este ano, a lista de dez filmes indicados na categoria principal é invejável, sem absurdos ou grandes surpresas (à exceção de Skyfall, que não chega a ser uma grande surpresa), mas nomes como o de Kim Ki-duk, responsável por Pieta, na categoria de Melhor Direção, não condiz com o restante da lista. Paul Thomas Anderson ou Tom Hooper seriam escolhas mais acertadas. No segmento televisivo, as presenças de The Newsroom e Nashville na categoria principal surpreendem e tiram um pouco a relevância da categoria, já que ambos os programas notadamente não têm a mesma qualidade de Breaking Bad ou Downton Abbey, por exemplo. Além disso Johnny Lee Miller por Elementary e Hayden Panettiere por Nashville indicados, respectivamente, para Melhor Ator e Atriz, é difícil de acreditar.
